Five college students earned scholarship awards through their written explorations of contemporary scientific topics.

"The winning essays illustrate the forward thinking and ingenuity our future workforce is capable of offering potential employers," said Chris Jock, vice president and general manager of Kelly Scientific Resources. "There is an eminent shortage of talent in our industry, so we applaud these students for their hard work and commitment to the field of science."

The winners

The overall winner of the 2006 Kelly Scientific Resources Future Scientists scholarship is Virkram Khosla of Westlake, Ohio. Enrolled as a chemistry student at Vanderbilt University, Khosla's exceptional essay on nanotechnology earned him a $3,000 educational scholarship.

  • Two honorable mention prizes of $750 were presented to Kevin Ma of Parkville, Mo., a biomedical engineering student attending Johns Hopkins University, and Leslie Mann of Nazareth, Pa., a chemistry student attending Drexel University.

Kelly's Future Scientists Program was established in 2000 to help connect entry-level science students with jobs, internships, and research opportunities at major chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech companies in the United States. The program provides a bridge between the scientific expertise of students and professors in academia and the personnel and recruiting needs of the science industry.

Kelly Scientific Resources invites Future Scientists interns who are placed on temporary assignments nationwide with Kelly's industry partners to compete for scholarships by submitting essays on contemporary scientific topics. Scientific professionals at Kelly judge the essays and select an overall winner and four runner-up awardees.
