Solid Job Creation to Continue - Kelly Services Advance Comment on Unemployment Rate Announcement

June 30, 2004

TROY, Mich., June 30 -- The following commentary by Carl Camden, president of global staffing company Kelly Services, Inc., is offered in advance of the June unemployment rate announcement due Friday from the U.S. Department of Labor. In May, the unemployment rate remained at 5.6 percent, and the economy gained a reported 248,000 jobs.

"The skyrocketing employment numbers of recent months can be expected to level off, but the clear trend is of strong and steady job creation with ample sparkle ahead.

"The economy has produced a million jobs over the last three months, and we believe it can produce up to another 1-to-1.5 million jobs before the end of the year. And these are good jobs being created. There is opportunity across almost the entire wage spectrum, where people are able to put themselves into the types of jobs they want through a better matching of their credentials to available jobs. There is tremendous pent-up demand for workers needed to meet the uplift in orders for goods and services.

"Manufacturing employment is coming back but still has a ways to go to reach the peaks we saw in 1999-2000. The types of manufacturing jobs with the most growth right now are the higher-end, specialty manufacturing positions. While demand for all credentialed professionals is increasing, information technology, telecom and engineering professionals in particular are the most sought-after right now.

"Conversions from temporary to permanent jobs are rising. People seeking permanent jobs are increasingly able to use temporary work as a way in the door.

"During an economic recovery, any single month's job data can show slackening or surges. The trend in job creation over several months provides a more meaningful gauge on the direction of employment than any single month's data. A look at the current trend shows us in the prime job-creating part of the economic upswing."
