Growing Optimism Propels Broad-Based Job Recovery - Kelly Services Advance Comment on Unemployment Rate Announcement

May 5, 2004

TROY, Mich., May 5 -- The following commentary by Terence Adderley, chairman and chief executive officer, and Carl Camden, president of global staffing company Kelly Services, Inc., is offered in advance of the April unemployment rate announcement due Friday from the U.S. Department of Labor. In March, the unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent, and the economy gained a reported 308,000 jobs.

"This economic recovery is now creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, and temporary staffing is producing a significant number of those jobs," said Adderley. "In fact, temporary employment has been growing, on a year-over- year basis, since April 2003. Our 15 percent sales growth in the first quarter was Kelly's strongest quarterly growth since 1997. This improvement has been seen across virtually every business line and geography," he said.

Camden noted broad-based improvement in hiring building from the first quarter. "We can expect sizable gains in job creation in the coming months," he said. "However, specific predictions on job creation are becoming an increasingly imprecise exercise. Government employment reports over the last several months have shown considerable volatility, with frequent and significant revisions to previous months' job data. What remains clear is the upward trend in job creation over recent months, providing a more meaningful view of the direction of employment than any single month's data. At street level, we are seeing strong temporary hiring across the country in all employment disciplines and extending to permanent jobs. Caution has given way to optimism, and the doors to hiring offices are opening wider," Camden said.
